Learning
Through the Arts
"Because Music and Art is more than a test score"
It
has been evaluated and stated that academically strong schools
tend to have strong Arts programs, and that families who value
academic achievement also value achievement in the Arts.
With
"No Child Left Behind" policy emphasizing performance
based on test scores, keeping the Arts in public school has
been subject to a national debate. In addition, with current
budgetary constraints, Arts Education is often discarded from
school curriculum.
Irrespective
of which side of the debate you agree with, there is strong
evidence that the Arts are vital to student learning. It has
often been stated that learning the Arts promotes the idea
that there is more than one solution to a problem or more
than one answer to a question because it allows students the
opportunity to envision, persist, justify, learn from mistakes
and make critical judgments.
As
your School Board Member, I will continue to be a strong advocate
for Arts Education in schools.
