Downtown Red Team:
The Downtown Red Team’s Vision and Positioning Strategy was a culminating of four months of planning and community input regarding the challenges facing the effort to reinvigorate our Azusa Downtown. The Red Team, composed of key community stakeholders, convened to develop a program for the revitalization of the downtown area with realistic and achievable objectives.
The Team first met on June 24, 1999 with the idea of creating an economic restructuring model. The model, later unanimously passed the approval of Azusa City Council, was intended to serve as a guide to direct the efforts of the City of Azusa’s staff in the marketing and development of the downtown area.
The objective of the model tackled the issues from creating a unique downtown that promoted a distinct sense of place that valued a tenant mix of retailers, service, office, cultural, and institutional users. Additional objectives included increasing occupancy rate, sales tax, and encouraging construction of new commercial space by developing a destination point drawing on a wide range of customers.
